1) Understand what Google wants

Why would you prefer searching on Google rather than Yahoo, Bing, or any other search engines ?

The simple answer to this question is, because Google provides the perfect answer to all your queries.

Google primarily focuses on displaying results for any subject that people mostly search for. According to Google’s new algorithm, for getting higher ranking, your content must be among the most searched topics and must opt for a standard quality.

Therefore, in order to write a copy that is optimised for search engines, you must first determine what Google desires right now and then choose your content topic accordingly.

Why is this so important ?

Till now you must have spent hours and hours, days and days, months over months to analyse how to increase your online visibility, right ?

Well, your patience ends here.

By understanding the wants of Google, you will actually get to know your search Intent or what exactly your target audiences are looking for.

Because Google’s changing algorithms makes content relevance more essential than ever. Hence, Google essentially wishes to rank sites that have the best answer to the searcher’s query.

2) Understand What is Search Intent

Search intent / keyword intent or user intent is identifying the needs of your target audience.

For example,

You would have noticed that whenever you search something on Google, at the end, you will get more options to explore on the same related topic.

See ? Google understands my requirements and offers me suggestions accordingly.

You need to do the same with your target audience. You need a SEO content writer who understands what exactly the searcher is searching for and offers content based on those requirements.

3) Keyword Research

The first and most important part of SEO copywriting is conducting extensive research on the subject.

Therefore, before you start writing the body of your copy, never forget to research about the mentality of the people, what exact words they are using to search for that particular topic.

This is known as Keyword Research.

For instance,

If you are thinking to join a gym and want to know list of gyms near your location, then the keywords can be –

Best gyms near me

Gyms near me with fees

Gyms near me Unisex

Gyms near me fees under 500

Consider these 3 main importance of Keyword research before digging deeper.

a) Identify what people are searching for

If you are reading these SEO practices then you might be thinking to improve your copywriting with proper SEO implementation.

If so then it is very important for you to understand what type of content you need for your business and what you should ignore.

Keyword research helps here to a great extent. For seeking online visibility, you need a content creator who never limits himself / herself creating something which “he / she wants to create.” Rather, they focus on producing something that “the target audience wants to see.”

Keyword research helps us to identify all those topics, along with the pain points and needs of your target audience.

b) Identify low competition content topics

Before digging deeper into this, you need to understand first the difference between Long tailed and short tailed keywords.

Long tailed keywords are those keywords which get a low number of searches per month. These keywords are usually more specific and longer, that’s why they have a higher conversion rate.

While on the other hand, short tailed keywords are those keywords which are less accurate and receive a lower conversion rate.

For instance,

Imagine you are searching for dental treatments. Then, “Best dentists” will be an example of Short tailed keywords while “Best dentists in Delhi” will be an example of Long tailed low competition keyword, based on the fact that this statement “Best dentists in Delhi” is being more specific with the location and the requirement.

Nowadays, there are many keyword research tools available for you to help out with your SEO content research. Some provide free services while the others work on paid procedures.

c) Helps in Search intent and SERP research

If you had read the blog carefully then till now you must have a clear idea about what search intent is and why it’s an important element in writing a SEO copy.

With search intent you also need to research the SERPs for your target keyword

Search Engine Research Pages or SERP are the top 10 blue links you see for every search.

Sometime our intention of searching is misinterpreted by google

That’s why you must google the keywords or use some tools for researching the keywords before starting your content writing.

With a search engine result page you can even optimise your content.

4) Focus on creating a great title

The first thing which compels everyone to read your content will be your title.

Here are your tips for creating a great title

Focus on 1-2 keyword in your title

  • Your title must include at least 1 keyword for which you are targeting. Concentrate on incorporating that keyword into your title in such a way that it appears natural rather than being forcefully placed.
  • Try to avoid overuse of keywords in your title tag. At max, you need to use 2 keywords here. Your keywords must be placed within the first 65 characters of your title.
  • Along with this, remember to start your title with some question or with an attractive phrase.
  • Adding keywords, questions or phrases in your title boosts your chances of getting a better online visibility.
  • Now you must be thinking how to create a perfect title for your amazing content, right ?
  • The simple solution to this will be creating a set of multiple titles. Create a title starting with a question, or a title starting with a phrase. Creating 2-3 variations of titles and then selecting the best one will increase your chances to present a better content result.

Make a Promise

  • Your title must commit a promise which emphasises with your target audience. You need to know what solutions your end users are trying to search, and what is their search intent.
  • Accordingly, you need to create your content, solving most of their pain points and needs.
    • For instance,
      • What is SEO copywriting ? And what is its importance ?
      • 15 ways how to become a SEO content writer
      • Why is SEO important for marketing in 2023
    • These all titles are concise and make a commitment about what the reader is going to learn at the end.

Prefer long headlines

According to a Hubspot survey, headlines with 8-12 words get more likes on Facebook and headlines with 12-14 words are mostly shared on Twitter.

Backlinko analysed that on an average, 14-17 words headlines get 76.7% more social shares than headlines with fewer words.

According to our experience, we would suggest to limit your title tags to 600 pixels column width.

Use numbers and year in your title

Analyse these images first !
  • You must have noticed in these 2 images that they have either some numbers at the beginning or a year at the end.
  • Both the images are showing results of page 1. Therefore, we can consider that one of the best and effective ways to start your title is with any number. This triggers a sense of trust and authority among your target audience.
  • Check out these five ways to write high-level headlines on a topic-

  • According to a research on overall headline preferences, it was conducted that using numbers in title are the most effective and preferable ones.

Go for odd numbers instead of even

According to various researches and studies, people take a long time to process an odd number.

Odd numbers are usually more thought provoking than the even numbers.

Therefore, while creating titles you need to make sure to use an odd number. The thought provoking theory of odd numbers can also be used inside your content part.

Due to implementation of this theory, your click through rates may increase quickly.

Avoid using STOP words

Do you include articles, propositions, conjunctions in your search ?

If yes, then stop doing this

Search engines consider these as STOP words and usually avoid them. So every article or preposition you include in your such has absolutely no value.

For instance,

Instead of searching – best places to visit in India

You can search this as – best places visit India

“To” and “In” here had absolutely zero value.

Here is a list of 75 STOP words which you can follow in SEO writing

5) Focus on Meta Description

Before starting with the points to improve your meta description, first let’s understand what exactly is Meta description.

So, basically for every page that comes as a result in any search engine includes both – title tag and meta description.

The title of the results in search engines is your title tag and a short description written below the title is your meta description.

You will get a better understanding looking at this example.

Now you might get an idea what exactly we are talking about.

You must create a meta description in such a way which gives your target audience a brief note of what they are going to get inside the article.

Creating an attractive meta description is important for your SEO copywriting because they affect your click through rates and your conversion rates.

  • On a serious note, here are some points which you definitely have to keep in mind before writing your meta description. These points are –
    • Try to have a unique description for your content.
      • Meta tags with benefits are always loved by Google or any other search engine. Having a unique element in your meta description will help in increasing your click through rates.
    • Add relevant keywords
      • Your targeted keywords must be included in your meta description. They should not be forcefully implemented. Write your description in a way as if you are talking with your target audience.
      • Try to use 2-3 keywords in your meta description.
    • Description length
      • Showing your entire description is very important to grasp the user’s attention. So that they start having an urge to read more in your blog.
      • You need to keep your meta description between 150 – 154 characters. If it’s too long then search engines will cut off the extra ones and your target audiences will not understand what exactly you are going to say in your blog.
      • This will eventually decrease your click through rates and hence your conversion rates.
    • Add a hook element
      • Creating a hook is an important part for your blog. This generates curiosity in the minds of your target audience.
      • Adding a hook or curiosity generating element in your description will attract users and compel them to think about what’s there inside the article.

6) Drive engagement via great content headlines

  • Following the creation of an excellent title, you must concentrate on the creation of an excellent heading. 77% of people will visit your website after reading your title and headline. So, if you want to rank better, concentrating on these two factors is essential.
  • For creating effective headlines, the most effective way is to use Trigrams. In linguistics, trigrams are a group of three consecutive words, syllables or letters
  • From 2019 to 2020
    • trigrams found in headlines with the highest engagements on Facebook are
      • of the year
      • in X years
      • for the first
      • the first time
      • one of the
      • X ways to

      • how to make
      • the X best
      • X reasons why
      • the future of
      • the x best
      • the rise of
      • the x most
      • what is the
    • From 2019 to 2020
      • trigrams found in headlines with the highest engagements on Twitter are
        • the future of
        • we need to
        • At least X
        • the end of
        • of the year
    • You can definitely try creating your headlines using these trigrams. These will boost your website traffic and gain more public attention.

7) Focus to create an Optimised Body

Before reading this, I’m sure you must have read about different strategies and formulas for creating the body of your content, right ?

So, I am not going to challenge any of those formulas and strategies out there but among them all, my favourite is the AIDA formula.

A – Attention
I- Interest
D – Desire
A – Action

ATTENTION

You need to have a master intro which grasps the attention of your target audience ASAP.

Remember, you just have 0.27 seconds of time to emphasise with your target audience, and to make your target audience feel that this is the place where they actually belong.

This feeling of belongingness will boost your bounce rate, conversion rate, and finally your growth rate.

Now, if you are not a Pro in SEO copywriting or in conversation building then no need to worry. For getting attention from your target audience, you just need someone who can build a perfect point of hook in your intro.

A hook can be a catchy line or a question, all depend upon you and your target base.

Creating a hook will compel your target audience to stay longer on your page and read what exactly you are going to say further.

Actually for your intro you can opt for the PAS formula which stands for,

a) Problem

b) Agitate

c) Solution

Look at this image for a better understanding.

  • According to this example,
    • Your hook can be the problem stating a sentence which immediately strikes the target audience and they connect with you.
    • Then you need to state the problem in a detailed way, including all the facts and figures, statistics.
    • Finally address all the benefits you are going to provide to your target audience in your blog or content. This part of the intro sections includes mainly the solution you are going to provide at the end of your blog, video or any other piece of your content.

Remember, your intro must be in a friendly tone. Write as if you are casually talking to your readers. It should never sound robotic. Otherwise, your target audience is not going to build connections and will leave the site without generating leads.

INTEREST

The next step you need to take after creating a hook is to build up the interest of your target audience.

“Let the audience know that you understand them”

This is the main mantra of a successful online marketing and hence plays a major role in SEO copywriting.

Your target audience must know that you are the one who completely understands them.

You need to list out their problems, pain points, needs and wants in the initial part of your content.

This will build up the interest level of your target audience.

You can use 3-4 keywords in your intro phase but remember not to add them forcefully. It should appear natural.

Go easy with the words you use. You should never use complicated words or unknown jargons in your content unless you are writing a thesis or some sort of research analysis.

Short sentences are 71% easier to read and understand. So you need to use shorter sentences instead of longer ones.

Repeat your keywords max 3-6 times for each paragraph without any forceful implementation. The flow of keywords, as mentioned easier, need to go naturally otherwise this can affect your content optimisation adversely. Too much implementation of keywords or keyword stuffing is not liked by Google or any other search engines.

Therefore, if you want search engines to love your content then avoid excess keyword stuffing .

DESIRE

After enlisting the pain points, wants, and needs of your target audience, it’s time to show them how you are going to solve and help them out.

This will be your main segment of your body. If you pass impressing your target audiences in this step then there is 89% chances that they will become your end-users.

There is a list of elements you can add here to make it more effective.
  • Use more images
  • Use screenshots
  • Use infographics
  • Use simple jargons
  • Use less but effective words
  • Use font between 16 to 20 pixels
  • Include subheadings, this will help in skimming
  • Create a data driven content
  • Use comparison table to build authority and trust
You can even present your content format in these ways to make it more effective
  • How to do guides
  • Comparison or versus
  • Step by step tutorials
  • Product reviews and feedbacks

ACTION

Time for the final call !

77% of the times, people usually end up stating their denial in buying your product or service as  “ I visited their website, it was pretty good but I need to think first”

Ughhhhh !

“Need to think first” Worst statement ever for a business person

You need to get out of this user’s comfort zone for making a sale.

Remember this Golden rule,

“ Never give your customers time to think !”

Giving your customers time to think is the biggest mistake you could ever commit. You need to build your CTA in such a way that people get forced to give you a lead.

For this

Just use this simple formula – the scarcity formula

The scarcity formula states you to create a feeling of scarcity or urgency in the minds of your target audience or whoever visits your website.

  • To create urgency and scarcity you can definitely add these phrases in your search engine optimised copy
    • Limited time offer
    • Quantities limited
    • Only 37 left
    • Sale ends on March 31st
    • Doors close on Friday
    • Don’t miss out

Rather in this AIDA formula, the last segment “Action” has nothing to do with your SEO copywriting but plays a major role in public engagement.

Afterall, this is the final thing you want, right ?

8) Never forget the Conclusion

Usually when we do something at the end we feel tired and always hurry out finishing it.

You need to avoid this attitude here !

Conclusion is a major part in SEO copywriting. At the end of every post you need to sum up everything you have included above. You need to make sure that your entire content has at least 3000 or above words in it. Try to conclude the entire blog by providing a summary with the perfect answer to all the questions related to the topic.

You need to optimise your conclusion with keywords and phrases.

In the words of Neil Patel, the SEO mastermind

This extra mile will be coming out with a perfect conclusion for your post. So never miss this out !

9) Adding Backlinks

It was pretty sure from the initial times, when Google founded its original algorithm known as “PageRank” that backlinks are going to play an important role in getting higher SERP rankings.

Search engines like Google use backlinks as a source of proof to check your website’s trust and authority level.

In most common cases, you can consider them as “votes” for your website. The more of these votes you hold, the higher your website will get a chance to rank higher in all the search engines.

Speaking about backlinks, you should know that there are 2 types of backlinks for every post.
a) Follow link
b) No Follow link

In general terms, there are some links which help you to get higher ranking and some links which are there to just make your content look natural, Google does not count them for higher SERP.

Follow links are the links which link your site with another site for adding value to your content. The more links you have from reputed sites, the more trust and authority level your website will hold in the eyes of Google and other search engines.

Getting links from Forbes or the Hindu will be a game changer !

On the other hand, No Follow links are the ones which are created to make your content look natural. Google never counts them in order to provide your website a better authority level.

No Follow links do not transfer or change the page ranking of your website.

Therefore, use backlinks carefully and try to link your page with some reputed pages. Remember, 10 good backlinks are better than 99 backlinks which are added just for sake.

10) Off Page SEO

Talking about backlinks made me feel like stating something about your Off page SEO.

Sure you too have put thousands of efforts to rank your website better than your competitors, right ?

Well, a few years earlier the same was our case.

We tried every technique, almost all the formulas and thousands of strategies to learn how to rank your website higher on Google but we failed.

After years of experience, we learned that just focusing on SEO work of your content will never land you on page 1. For something  greater you need to do something extraordinary.

And here comes the concept of ‘Off Page SEO”

According to Google’s algorithm, about 50% ranking factors are affected by your Off Page SEO.

All the elements you put into show for boosting the trust, authority and visibility of your website on all search engines are a part of your Off Page SEO.

There are 3 techniques you can use for a better Off Page SEO.

A) Create Backlinks

As mentioned earlier, from the initial times when Google founded its algorithm “PageRank” , creating Backlinks was an important part of SEO Copywriting.

After PageRank, Google made thousands of changes in their algorithm but then also adding backlinks for getting higher SERP was a major point for copywriters to worry about.

Along with this, now as per Google’s new algorithm, you need to put valid backlinks which really relate with your post and add value to your content. You need to add 3-4 internal links on your each post for getting better chances of higher ranking. The more in-bound links present in your article, the more search engines like Google will value and highlight your content.

As per our expertise over this segment, there are majorly two ways of creating backlinks for your website. They are –

i ) Natural backlinks

After creating content for a long period of time focusing on quantity as well as quality, people, mainly the researchers and bloggers start noticing your efforts. If your content follows the rule of coming up with “benefits over features” each time, then most probably people start giving references of your page in their posts to increase the value of their content.

Once, you get referred by any reputed sites like the telegraph, Times of India, or any other brand blogs then this can boost your search engine ranking.

But as said earlier, this process requires patience, a lot of them !

Therefore, here comes our point 2 as a tip for you to boost your backlink rate to a certain level.

ii ) Social media marketing

Let your blogs, videos, posts reach out everywhere via social media. This will not only help you to create your product/ service awareness but also will help you to create backlinks.

Social media marketing is one of the most effective forms of your Off Page SEO technique. With its ability to reach every corner of the world within seconds, it can be a crucial source for creating valuable backlinks for your page.

Reach out to different social media platforms for different groups of target audience. Browse the communities where you feel your target audience might hand out the most. You can try out with LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

B ) Guest Content

Let me first clear out your confusions with the meaning of the topic !

Guest content as the name suggests is creating posts for some other website or company. This is our next technique to focus on for improving our Off Page SEO.

Imagine you wrote blogs, created content and videos for some other company for 2 years and now all the clients, competitors and company members know you and your work.

After this, if you write anything related to this industry later on in any time frame, you will be a trustworthy person to refer to for that company and people related to that company.

Therefore, with guest content or guest blogging you can build relationships, drive referral traffic to your website, create a new audience base, and create backlinks for your SEO copywriting.

C ) Local Listings

Listing your site in local directories will help you to reduce competition to a large extent. With reduction in competition your traffic rate and conversion rate have higher chances to increase here.

Localised search results are those in which the user mentioned a location as a part of their search. This usually includes a search with “near me” or “nearby” phrases mentioned over it.

These local listings are extremely useful in terms of creating backlinks as well ad revenue generation.

11) On Page SEO

Now that we have talked about the off page SEO first, next we need to deal with the On page SEO of your website.

Usually, when you learn SEO copywriting, initially you learn to master On Page SEO and then move forwards with improving your Off page SEO elements.

This is because On Page SEO or On Site SEO includes everything inside your post (internal factors) which can help you out in getting a higher position in SERP. And Off Page SEO includes external factors which bring traffic to your website.

Here, you need to deal with optimising your content as per Google’s algorithm, creating optimised title tag, and description. You need to focus on the easy navigation part a bit not because of SEO but for better user experience. For this, focus on creating your content with proper headings and subheadings. Every paragraph must hold 3-4 lines max.

Use images, less but effective words, infographics for coming up with data driven content, attractive jargons, and SEO specific content  for improving your On Page SEO.

Another important element of On Page SEO is creating links. While in Off Page SEO you mainly include backlinks from external sites, here in On Page SEO you include internal links.

You can add links at the start for sorting the entire post. Also you can add links to your own previous post.

So, overall there are few ways you can deal with the On-Page SEO of your content

  • Adding targeted keywords in your title
  • Including imagestags
  • Adding headings and subheadings
  • Creating effective meta title and description
  • Focus on creating short URL for better optimisation

As previously stated, your Off Page SEO influences approximately 50% of the ranking factors. Your On Page SEO contributes another 50% to your site’s better ranking.

Therefore, focusing on all these points will give you an upper hand in the prevailing market competition.

12) Include a Bonus point in your Copy

The Psychology theory states that, people usually go for that product or service which provides them something for free or something extra.

Utilising this theory in creating your article, video or any form of content for any social media platform will definitely give you positive results.

Remember to include a bonus point at the end of your content or video, this attracts the attention of your target audience and compels them to read or watch till the end.

According to economic content website research, a copy becomes 65%-90% more effective when you include a bonus point in it.

13) Promote your Post

Promotion of your product, service, blogs, videos or any form of content is a great tool for reaching out to a mass audience base and increasing your online visibility.

You can use email marketing, social media marketing, email outreach to promote your post.

Without giving it a second thought just reach out to everyone whose sites you are referencing in your post stating the relevance of your content with their blog.

Use social media platforms to engage a new and larger audience base. You must go to quora or reddit to post your contents. Try to maintain your presence in almost all the social media platforms with different content forms. Use the blog content and create a video out of it or try out something with infographics.

This will help Google or any other search engine to recognise you faster and boost your visibility rate.

There are hundreds of ways with which you can promote your post. Let’s hear some from the SEO master – Neil Patel.

Here is a list of some of the best keyword research tools which we use to help our clients with their keyword research.

c) Helps in Search intent and SERP research

    • Question Title – What are the ways to learn SEO copywriting ?

    • Number Based Title – 11 ways to write a SEO content in 2023
    • Reader Based Title – Ways you need to follow for becoming a skilled SEO copywriter

  • From 2019 to 2020
    • trigrams found in headlines with the highest engagements on Facebook are
      • of the year
      • in X years
      • for the first
      • the first time
      • one of the
      • X ways to
      • X of the
      • how to make
      • the X best
